How accurate is an online ruler? Calibration explained
An online ruler is accurate to about one millimeter - after you calibrate it to your screen. Uncalibrated, it can be off by several percent. The reason is simple: a pixel on screen is not a fixed physical size.
Why screens need calibration
Web browsers assume a nominal 96 pixels per inch (PPI) when drawing lengths. Real displays range from about 80 PPI on large monitors to over 400 PPI on phones. If the ruler assumes 96 PPI on a 227 PPI laptop screen, every “inch” it draws is less than half a real inch.
Calibration answers one question: how many pixels equal one real inch on this display? Once you know that number, the ruler can draw every centimeter, millimeter, and inch at true physical size.
How to calibrate with a credit card
The most reliable method uses a credit or bank card, because every credit, debit, and ID card is 85.6 mm wide (ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1) - a worldwide standard.
- Select “Credit card” in the calibration panel under the online ruler.
- The ruler highlights a band exactly 85.6 mm long.
- Hold your card against the screen with its left edge on the 0 mark.
- Adjust the PPI until the card’s right edge lines up with the red band.
- Save the PPI - it is stored in your browser and reused on your next visit.
What limits accuracy anyway?
Even a calibrated screen ruler is limited by its inputs:
- Your display and calibration quality - the credit-card method is typically good to about 1 mm.
- Browser zoom and OS scaling - recalibrate if you change zoom, switch monitors, or rotate a phone.
- The tool’s own quality - a good ruler renders ticks from the PPI value instead of stretching a fixed image. The Online Ruler draws everything from your PPI, down to 1/32-inch graduations.
How to verify your ruler
After calibrating, check the ruler against a known object: a credit card (85.6 mm), a US quarter (24.26 mm), or a sheet of A4 paper (210 mm wide). If the on-screen band matches the physical object, your ruler is set. For critical work, always verify against a physical ruler or calipers - an on-screen ruler is a convenience tool, not a calibration instrument.
Ready to measure? Open the online ruler, calibrate it once against a credit card, and start measuring in cm, mm, or inches.
